Gauri Devi is a visionary and a pioneer in her art form. Her reverent desire to share the beauty and textures of Indian spiritual culture in innovative and groundbreaking ways reveals why she is a force of inspiration and marvel.
From a very young age, the fabric of her imagination was nurtured by the great epics of Mahabharata, Ramayana, Srimad Bhagavatam, and Bhagavad-Gita. As a result, beginning at the age of three, little Gauri started bringing these stories to life through classical Indian dance.
Gauri Devi has been a practitioner and student of the classical Indian dance form of Kathak for over a decade. She graduated from Sri Rama Bharatiya Kala Kendra with honors and trained under maestros like Birju Maharaj, Pandit Rajendra Gangani, and Kumudini Lakhia. Currently, she continues to train under the guidance of her friend and teacher Sanjukta Sinha.
In 2005, a life-altering tragedy occurred. In such high spirits learning of her acceptance into the exclusive dance school of Sri Rama Bharatiya Kala Kendra, Gauri and her sister went to celebrate. On the way through the street markets of Delhi, a mothering cow charged toward them sending them both into oncoming traffic. Gauri pushed her sister out of the way but fate had it that she would not escape untouched. The car ran over her foot and ankle completely crushing it and her dreams. Upon examination, the doctors declared she never dance again let alone have trouble walking. Her dream of becoming an Indian classical dancer was presented and taken away within that day. The verdict was presented by the doctors but her heart was not convinced that she came across the world to give up now. As any great journey continues, we must allow ourselves to feel our emotions and face our fears as we walk the path of the unknown with faith and courage. Armed with meditation, prayer, yoga, and acupressure, she decided she was going to do the unthinkable. In her dark night of the soul when it felt like there was no hope, she prayed, she crawled, she lifted herself up and visualized healing and recovering. Three operations later, with physiotherapy and crippling pain, Gauri’s recovery was nothing short of a miracle. A year and a half later she danced again as a student in Sri Rama Bharatiya Kala Kendra School of Indian classical dance and graduated 3 years later with honors.
What is the purpose of this human life if we are not living in alignment with our truth and sharing our authentic offerings with the world?
Gauri’s account is a testament to never lose sight of your dreams, to never lose faith and conviction in your purpose.
After graduating and spreading her wings into the world of dance and performance she furthered her learnings and self-taught herself Aerial Silks, and Acro Yoga. Her first studio was in a park, with her aerial cloth rigged to a tree and grass as her stage. With years of practice and devotion, Gauri Devi created her new breathtaking performance style – an amalgamation of Circus and Indian Classical dance.
Gauri Devi thrives as a multiverse of talent. With her knowledge and expertise as a performer, she brings her own authentic voice and vision to the shows she creates.
